What is Yoga?

What is Yoga?

In sanskrit, the ancient language of India, Yoga means Union. While there are many different styles or ways of practicing the physical act of yoga, the ultimate goal for each is the same, achieve union. Yoga is intended to bring you into a greater sense of connectedness to your breath, body, and ultimately the divine within you.

When most people think of yoga what comes to mind are the physical postures. While asanas (postures) are one part of the practice, there are seven other limbs or aspects that make up the complete yoga practice:

  • Ethical Standards

  • Self-Discipline

  • The Physical Practice

  • Breathing Techniques

  • Control of the senses (ability to turn your awareness inwards)

  • Single Pointed Focus

  • Meditation

  • Achieving a state of bliss

Before you feel overwhelmed know that it is not necessary to practice all of these things to be considered a good yogi. Showing up on your mat, even if it is to just sit and breathe is enough! Your practice is your own. It can be as much or as little as you want it to be. It’s okay if all you want is a good workout, or touch your toes, but know if you want more from your practice it is there for you. Yoga can be a lifestyle, something you practice on and off your mat. If your interested in finding out more about yoga ask your teacher! Any of our teachers would be happy to reccomend books or answer questions.
